Have you been dreaming of a grilled cheese for a while? Why not try ours? Just fancy enough with our caramelized onions and a touch of acidity thanks to the apple slices. And completely cruelty-free thanks to our smoked Gouda! A true delight!

Preparation time: 20-25 minCooking time: 5-10 min

Ingredients

  • a medium-large red onion

  • ½ tablespoon of coconut oil

  • ½ teaspoon of cane sugar

  • a pinch of salt and pepper

  • 1 teaspoon of balsamic vinegar

  • slices of bread

  • vegan butter

  • a package of Nafsika’s Garden smoked gouda cheese (sliced)

  • an apple, heart removed

Steps

  1. Thinly slice the onion (into a round and/or half-moon shape).

  2. Cook the caramelized onions: in a pan, over low-medium heat, melt the coconut oil. Add the onion and cook for 10 minutes uncovered, stirring here and there until the onion is golden, slightly brown. If necessary, reduce the heat to to prevent the onion from burning. Sprinkle the sugar over the onions, along with the salt and pepper, mix and cook for 2 minutes more. Add the balsamic vinegar, mix, cook for an additional minute then remove from the heat. To book

  3. Toast two slices of bread (or more depending on the number of grilled cheeses desired).

  4. While the bread is toasting, thinly slice an apple and preheat a skillet over medium heat.

  5. Spread both sides of each slice of toast with the vegan butter. Then place a slice of Nafsika’s Garden Smoked Gouda, spread a spoonful of caramelized onions, add a few slices of apple and place the second slice of toasted (and buttered) bread on top.

  6. Cook the grilled cheese: place the grilled cheese in the preheated pan. Reduce the heat to medium-low and place a second pan on the grilled cheese to exert pressure/weight on it. Cook for 3-4 minutes, while preventing the bread from burning, then do the same on the other side of the grilled cheese. Remove from heat, cut in half and enjoy hot!
